Hey everyone,
I hope you’ve all been well. Apologies for the radio silence—I've been incredibly busy with various projects and haven’t had much time to post. But I’m excited to finally share something with you that I think you’ll find quite interesting
Let’s talk about ROEST, arguably one of the top two sample roasting machines in the world. In my book, it's number one. This machine is a masterpiece, designed not only for repeatability, ease of use, consistency, and sustainability but also for self-maintenance and repair. This aspect alone is a stroke of engineering genius.

Our 100g sample roasting machine has been a true workhorse, serving as our backup for shop consumption production roasters. We relied on it until our larger batch size production roasting machine arrived, which took longer than expected. We pushed our ROEST to its limits, clocking in nearly 3,000 batches. Yes, almost 3,000 batches, including over 500 batches roasted for the GCC roasting competition organized by ASID. It was overdue for maintenance, but thanks to its clever design, we managed it without requiring specialized equipment or technicians.
I remember changing the heating element myself during the roasting competition. This could have taken 3 to 4 weeks with the supplier’s technician, but I did it on the spot, saving both time and hassle.

When the time came for a thorough maintenance session, I had to disassemble the machine piece by piece. The ROEST blog and channel were invaluable resources, guiding me through the process. Attention to detail was crucial—each part was carefully labeled and packed for easy identification. While my team and I participated in the Cypher Ultimate Challenge (where we proudly took home a 3rd place trophy out of over 60 competitors), the smoked and burnt parts of the machine were soaking.
Returning from the competition, I reassembled the machine piece by piece, bringing the beast back to life. A happy machine means happy roasting, which in turn means happy customers enjoying delicious coffee. We warmed up the machine and roasted some Indian coffee to season it, and we were back in business.

Although the existing profiles didn’t follow 100%, they were incredibly close. The more sensitive and responsive probes allowed us to make a few adjustments, matching the target colors and delivering amazing-tasting coffee once again.
For those interested in maintaining their ROEST machines, here are a few links that might help. Remember, 98% of the tools you need are already in your ROEST box.
