As we bid farewell to the challenges and triumphs of 2023, it's time to reflect on the journey of growth and resilience in the world of coffee. For many of us, myself included, 2023 was a year filled with hurdles to overcome and opportunities to seize. From bustling coffee exhibitions to rigorous competitions and invaluable certifications, each experience has shaped us into better professionals and individuals.

The year kicked off with the vibrant energy of the World of Coffee Dubai, where coffee enthusiasts and industry professionals converged to celebrate our shared passion. It was a delight to connect with fellow coffee lovers, participate in throwdown challenges, and clinch the first-place spot in the Oatly latte art competition. Winning not only brought personal satisfaction but also set a positive tone for the year ahead.

One of the highlights of 2023 was the opportunity to pursue certifications from the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI). Becoming a Q Arabica Grader and attaining Q Processing Level One certification were pivotal moments in my career journey. The wealth of knowledge gained from these certifications has not only deepened my understanding of coffee but also equipped me with invaluable skills for professional growth.

However, amidst the successes, there were challenges to navigate, particularly in the realm of hiring. As head of operations, the hiring process proved to be a complex endeavor. Yet, each interaction with candidates, whether fruitful or not, served as a valuable learning experience. Adapting and refining hiring strategies has been essential for building a strong team and fostering a positive work environment.

Competing in various competitions throughout the year was both exhilarating and humbling. From defending my title at the African Coffee Community UAE online latte art championship to clinching the runner-up position at the Lavazza UAE Barista Championship, each competition pushed me to hone my skills and showcase my passion for coffee. The journey culminated in the hope of representing the UAE on the world stage in Turin, Italy, in April 2024—a dream I eagerly anticipate fulfilling.

Amidst the whirlwind of activities, prioritizing education remained paramount. Despite a packed schedule, I made time to pursue modules from the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), obtaining certifications in Brewing Intermediate and Barista Foundation. Special thanks to Samson Kibunja, a certified SCA Authorized SCA Trainer, whose dedication to education has been truly inspiring.

In retrospect, 2023 was a year of growth, resilience, and invaluable lessons. It taught me the importance of discipline, patience, and consistency in pursuing my goals. As we embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in 2024, let us carry forward the lessons learned and continue to strive for excellence in the world of coffee.

Thank you, 2023, for the memories, the challenges, and the opportunities for growth. Here's to embracing the journey ahead with enthusiasm and determination.
